Key Considerations and Limitations

As part of CSULB's adoption of Microsoft CoPilot Enterprise, it’s essential to understand the tool’s capabilities, restrictions, and best practices. Below are key points to keep in mind:

  • Who has access?  Microsoft CoPilot Enterprise is available for students, Stateside faculty and staff to use. Auxiliary and Foundation employees are not included by default.  Other user types that are excluded are emereti, volunteers, and student assistants.
  • The agreement with Microsoft requires that the tool not be used to evaluate student work
  • Data within the CSULB ecosystem remains protected and is not shared with Microsoft.
  • During the Preview phase, encrypted and de-identified prompts may be processed on servers located outside the United States.
  • If funding requirements mandate that all data must be housed within the United States, consider alternative solutions.
  • Microsoft Copilot Enterprise cannot be used to create new, similar, or competing products. Reverse engineering of the tool is also prohibited.
  • Each conversation or session is limited to 30 chats. Be mindful of this restriction during extended interactions.
  • Microsoft Copilot Enterprise utilizes the latest GPT-4 model from OpenAI.
  • Always verify facts and cross-check information generated by AI models.  Users remain responsible for assessing the validity and usefulness of content produced by Copilot.
  • AI models, including generative ones, may exhibit implicit biases based on their training data.
  • Actively work to minimize any potential biases. Remember that generative AI is not a substitute for critical thinking. Use it to enhance your creativity and ideation.
  • While Copilot assists, ensure that your unique voice remains central to your work. Properly cite information and credit original authors. Respect copyright guidelines.
  • Understand that Microsoft Copilot Enterprise is subject to change in terms of features and availability as it evolves.
