What is Office 365?
Office 365 is a Microsoft home use product that allows CSULB faculty, staff and students access to the Microsoft suite of software and services for free on their personal devices as long as they are associated with the University. This includes:
- Microsoft Office for Windows and Mac
- Microsoft Office Web Apps
- Microsoft Office Mobile Apps
- Microsoft OneDrive for Business and more

Is this Office 365 Subscription Free?
All active CSULB faculty (including lecturers), staff and students will receive this subscription for free. Emeritus faculty and staff are not eligible.
Will my Office 365 subscription expire?
The amount of time you have before you lose access to the Office 365 and the files stored in your OneDrive for business varies based on whether you are faculty, staff or student.
- If you are CSULB faculty, you will lose access to Office 365 and the files stored in your OneDrive for Business 365 days after your separation.
- If you are CSULB staff, you will lose access to Office 365 and the files stored in your OneDrive for Business immediately after your separation.
- If you are a CSULB student, you will lose access to Office 365 and the files stored in your OneDrive for Business 120 days after you have graduate.
If you want to continue using Office 365 and OneDrive for Business after you are associated with CSULB, prior to separating you must:
- Back up the data in your CSULB OneDrive for Business.
- Purchase your own Office 365 subscription
- Restore the data you backed from your CSULB OneDrive for Business to your new OneDrive for Business

What Is OneDrive for Business?
OneDrive for Business is a service that provides “cloud” file storage for home use purposes, and provides ways to share and collaborate with anyone on files that are stored there. For more information, please see OneDrive for Storing and Sharing Documents.

Office 365 Information and Installation Instructions provides guidance for different operating systems on how to download and install Office 365 desktop applications. Each subscription license allows you to install the Office 365 apps on up to ten personal devices total, and is available on the following operating systems:
How are the Office Web Apps different from Office for Windows and Mac?
Office Web Apps (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote) run in a web browser. They have limited features, but allow you to open, edit and share your Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote files from any device that has a web browser.
What is Office 2021?
Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 are the next perpetual releases of Office. They include improvements over Microsoft Office 2019 and earlier versions of on-premises Office.
Microsoft 365 is a subscription service that makes sure you always have the most up-to-date modern productivity tools. Microsoft 365 already has all the features that will be coming to Office 2021 and Office LTSC, including such features as real-time collaboration as well as other advanced productivity and security features not found in Office 2021 or Office LTSC.
