Purpose of Using Google Voice for MFA

In some cases, if users do not have access to a mobile device (including a tablet) or a land line, a creative option is to use a free Internet based phone service like Google Voice.  Essentially, a Google Voice phone number can receive a phone call on a device like a computer with Internet access.  Whether you're an existing Gmail user or not, the process is easy.

Sign Up for Google Voice and Get Your Number

  1. On your computer, go to voice.google.com.
  2. Sign in to your Google Account (or create an account if you don't have one).
  3. After reviewing the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, tap Continue.
  4. Search by city or area code for a number.
  5. Next to the number you want, click Select.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to create your Google Voice number.
